What is SIBO?
Small intestinal
bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is an imbalance in the bacteria in the small
intestine. It may be an overgrowth of microbes normally living in small numbers
in the small intestines, or it might be improperly placed microbes normally
seen living in the colon. In either case the imbalance causes bloating and
diarrhea. These symptoms can be quite uncomfortable.

Some herbs that can be helpful in alleviating the symptoms of SIBO:
Chamomile and licorice root can be used to heal small intestine damage, both of which can be taken as a tea.
Gotu kola is another anti-inflammatory herb that can assist in healing a damaged digestive tract.
Ginger and bitters can be used to increase acid production, if SIBO developed as a result of too little stomach acid. Apple cider vinegar can also be taken.
Gentian and barberry are effective bitters. Dandelion root is another bitter that also supports the liver.
Milk thistle is an herb that helps improve a sluggish digestion, and has a beneficial effect on the liver. Fennel can improve the movement of bowels as well.
Garlic is a useful antibacterial plant. It can be eaten raw or taken in capsules if the taste is not appealing. Antimicrobial herbs may be needed to decrease the number of bacteria.
Oregano oil is an effective antimicrobial herb.
Peppermint is commonly used to treat heartburn and nausea. It also has antimicrobial properties and can help restore the balance. It can be taken as capsules, tea, tincture, or oil.
