Candida is a yeast-like fungus,
which is commonly present in your intestines. Its growth is usually limited by
your immune system and by your micro flora, the "good" microbes
lining in your digestive tract.
Candida can become problematic when
the immune system is weakened, resulting
in intestinal candidiasis. This overgrowth can become systemic leading to
thrush in the mouth and throat, vaginal infections, and skin eruptions.
Common symptoms include:
fatigue
bloating
gas
diarrhea and/or
constipation
recurring bladder
infections
depression
What increases the
risk of Candida overgrowth? The most common
factors:
Repeated use of
antibiotics, oral contraceptives, and/or steroids like prednisone
Diet high in sweets
Alcohol
Chronic stress
Diabetes
Weakened immune
system
How is Candida
treated? A comprehensive approach is necessary to reduce the overgrowth of Candida organisms. The risk factors
listed above must be reduced as much as possible, while supporting immune, digestive, and liver function. Since yeast
feeds on carbohydrates, a food plan
must be followed that starves yeast of its main fuel, simple sugars. There are several herbs that
have been found effective in reducing Candida overgrowth. Probiotics are also used
to compete with Candida in the intestines,
resulting in a re-balancing of the micro flora.
Herbs
and supplements for use in treating Candida:
Berberine:
is an alkaloid that can be found in
barberry, and goldenseal as well as in a few other plants. It is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, and can
be taken as a supplement. It should not be used
by children, pregnant, or lactating women.
Garlic
: has many medicinal properties, it is an antioxidant, antibiotic, and
anti-fungal. It can be eaten raw or
taken as a supplement.
Oregano:
is an anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial. Medicinally it is generally used as an oil, which can
be encapsulated.
Peppermint:
is an anti-microbial, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It interacts with some medications in in-vitro and animal studies.
Thyme:
is an antibiotic, and anti-fungal. It is generally used as an oil, which can
also be encapsulated.
