Helpful Herbs and Supplements for Migraine Relief

For the last post on migraines I picked a few of the most important herbs and supplements used for migraine relief. However it's important to remember to start with food, consider the nutrients you may be missing, and consider the foods that may be a problem for you. Remember also to try to decrease the stress in your life. Migraines can be horribly debilitating, but it is possible to find the key for reducing your migraine pain.

Feverfew has been used for hundreds of years for treatment of headaches. It is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to prevent migraines. WARNING It should not be taken during pregnancy or during lactation.

Ginkgo is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory with vascular, anti-platelet and anticoagulant effects. It alters neurotransmitters and acts as a neuro-protector. WARNING While ginkgo appears to be safe in healthy individuals, it does have numerous drug interactions, such as the potential to increase bleeding risk when taking warfarin.

Ginger has anti-inflammatory, antihistamine actions and affects platelet aggregation. It has the  ability to improve signs of nausea, which is often seen in people who experience migraines. WARNING High doses of ginger are not recommended for children under the age of six, nor is it currently recommended for pregnant women. It has interactions with anti-platelet drugs and warfarin due to its anti-platelet effects.

Magnesium functions to maintain the tone of blood vessels, it calms nerve cells and it works to improve glycemic response during carbohydrate metabolism.

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is needed to produce DAO (diamine oxidase), which is able to lower histamine.

Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) can help reduce the incidence of migraines. Riboflavin works to improve your brain’s energy metabolism and its cells. It offers protection and helps the cells to maintain energy.

CoQ10 (coenzyme Q10) is one of the main energy sources for your body. This powerful antioxidant supports your cells, your blood-vessels, and it protects your body from stress-induced free radicals.

Calcium helps to control muscle and nerve functioning in addition to its role in building strong bones and teeth. Migraine suffers have been found to have low calcium levels in their brains and body tissue.
